Bula! is a Fijian greeting, used to say both 'hello' and 'welcome'. Its closest translation into English is to wish someone a 'good life'. In every way imaginable, Fiji is about as far away from Rochdale as it's possible to get. It'd be extraordinary to think that there's much to link a tropical Pacific Island nation with a Northern Pennine mill-town. But this is an extraordinary story. In the early 60s, Rochdale Hornets were punching well below their weight in the unglamourous, gladiatorial sport of Rugby League. In an almost surreal act of vision and ambition, they placed an advertisement for players in a Fijian newspaper. What they got in response wasn't just an influx of players, but a group of pioneering adventurers who brought their Pacific culture to the North West of England - and a town that took these sporting giants to its heart.
